Message from the President!

Dear Valued MAHU Member;

I hope this message finds you healthy and staying busy! Covid has certainly caused many changes for all of us and I am reaching out to you today with an update from the MAHU Board. There are many exciting announcements to cover, and I know this is a long message, but please read on to learn more about MAHU Reinvented!.

While we have all pivoted to a virtual world for the past year, MAHU has worked to do the same. We have determined that there are Board positions in all three of our AHU’s that duplicate efforts, there are duplicate expenses and, as such, we have collectively been working on a strategy to consolidate the Boards and programming for all of them (Baltimore, Greater Washington, and Eastern Shore). This will allow us to provide a consistent experience across all three chapters for both members and our sponsor partners.

While we will remain virtual for the balance of this year, our plan for when it is safe to go back to in-person programming will be to hold regional events in our Baltimore, Greater Washington, and Eastern Shore areas with the opportunity to join virtually as well – hybrid meetings. We all love the social aspect of getting together, but there is also value in providing the events virtually simultaneously to allow everyone to participate in a regional meeting where there might not have been that opportunity in the past due to distance of travel and traffic.

In the coming week you will receive a survey request to vote on this consolidation. For your review, the bylaws are included on this website too. Please take the time to vote on this consolidation. This will allow us to leverage our resources and finances to best serve our membership and provide value to you. If you wish to discuss the consolidation further, please do not hesitate to reach out to me.

As our Board is comprised of all volunteer positions, we are always working to balance our personal and professional lives with our commitment to the Association. I am pleased to announce that I have been voted by the MAHU Board of Directors in to the position of President. I am a Strategic Advisor at TriBridge Partners and have been in the insurance industry for 23 years. I was most recently President of the Baltimore AHU and have worked with the MAHU Board to make this transition. We are excited to announce the MAHU Board for this year, please take a look at our Board of Directors tab on this website.

As you can see, we have an all-star Board! We are always looking for additional support for projects and initiatives. If you are interested in getting involved with us in any of these Board areas, please reach out to me. MAHU does employ a paid, outside bookkeeper, however, our Treasurer position is open. If you have an interest in financials, we would love to have you!

Our lobbyists Bryson Popham & Joan Smith of Bryson F. Popham, P.A law firm continue to advocate on our behalf in Annapolis. Legislative affairs are critical to our efforts as an association and Bryson and Joan provide invaluable support in this area. We are working to provide more regular legislative updates to you, so you can continue to see the value that their experience brings to our industry and region.

Here is an update on MAHU programming:

  • This will be expanded over prior years to include CE opportunities and additional virtual programs.

  • We are also already committed to a new platform to host Expo remotely and have engaged the outside firm that will be running that event. We are excited to elevate our virtual Expo with the new event platform!

  • Our goal timeframe for the CE sessions and additional programs are slated for May, June and July with Expo being held in August.

  • Please keep an eye out for the Save-the-Date information as soon as those dates and topics are firmed up!

Sponsorship revenue from our valued vendor partners has always been critical to furthering our mission of providing education and programming to our membership. In the past, our vendor partners have been asked to be a sponsor separately from our regional AHU’s in addition to MAHU. We are in the process of finalizing our sponsorship packages and will be reaching out to our vendors with a package that will highlight their exposure to the entire membership and on a virtual basis for the coming year. We are always looking for new vendor partners. If you are interested or have suggestions for vendor partners that would be a good fit for us, please let me know.

If you have made it this far, THANK YOU! As you can see, there is a lot going on with MAHU and we sincerely thank you for staying with us while we have worked to make these changes and continue through Covid. While many have suffered immeasurably during the pandemic, one of the silver linings of Covid has been to teach us all to embrace the virtual world and make the best of it. I truly believe this has allowed us to reinvent MAHU for the better and we are excited to bring this all to you. Thank you again for reading the story of MAHU Reinvented! and please keep an eye out for more to come!

Regards,

Nancy Colaianne
